LEETONIA- In addition to the annual spring clean-up, this year the village will participate in a community clean up program.
The village for the first time will participate in the program in conjunction with the Carroll-Columbiana-Harrison Solid Waste District, accepting household furniture and appliances, electronics and passenger and light truck tires (without rims) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17 and 18 at Village Hall.
Village Administrator Gary Phillips said residents are responsible for unloading their items and that identifications will be checked to make sure those dropping off items reside in the village.
Material that will be collected includes furniture, mattresses and all other non-metal large items that people cannot normally set out for their garbage collection. No household garbage or hazardous wastes such as paints, oils or propane tanks will be accepted. The county's household hazardous waste collection is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 14 at the fairgrounds in Lisbon.
Phillips said he hopes the collection will become an annual event.
The collection caps the village's spring clean up that begins Monday and continues through May 17. Only brush and bagged leaves will be collected. All brush and bagged leaves should be stacked in the front curb lawn for pick up. Brush must be cut in lengths no longer than 4 feet and must be stacked all in the same direction.
The village will not pick up mixed piles of materials such as leaves and brush mixed together. No appliances, furniture or any other types of debris that has to be hauled to a landfill will be collected during that time.
