LISBON - While the U.S. Postal Service may be keeping Saturday home delivery for now, it is following through with plans to reduce operating hours at rural and small post offices.

The Cleveland office of the USPS recently announced reduced hours at the following post offices in Columbiana County: East Rochester, Elkton, Homeworth, Kensington, Negley and Washingtonville. Each has been reduced to four and six hours, depending on the post office.

The reductions occurred following a series of public meetings, according to David Van Allen, head of corporate communications at the USPS's regional office in Cleveland.

Four other post offices in the county are scheduled for a reduction in operating hours once another series of public hearings is held. Those post offices and the proposed hour reductions are: North Georgetown, four hours; Salineville, six hours; Summitville, four hours; and Winona, four hours. Saturday hours will remain unchanged at each site.

The reductions are part of a restructuring plan announced in May 2012 to keep as many small and rural post offices open as possible. The restructuring was to be phased in and be completed by September 2014.
