SEBRING- The charge against an East Liverpool schools volunteer sports coach who was dismissed following an arrest last month in Goshen Township for threatening a repossession agent with a shotgun has been amended to a misdemeanor.
Gary W. Kohler, 57, 7353 W. Pine Lake Road, Salem, Thursday was fined $250 and court costs on the amended charge of fourth-degree misdemeanor disorderly conduct. The fine and costs were paid in full.
Kohler had been charged with felonious assault after he threatened a repossession agent with a shotgun while the agent was attempting to repossess Kohler's vehicle at 3:36 a.m. March 7. He told Goshen police officers he heard noises outside and thought someone was stealing his vehicle. He also reportedly told officers he had the right to protect his property from being stolen and that he was not certain it was a repossession in progress.
Kohler was approved as a volunteer sports coach at East Liverpool schools on March 11, but was asked to resign when the administration learned of the arrest. Schools Superintendent James Herring said at the time that the appointment would be revisited depending on the outcome of the case.
Herring was unavailable for comment on Thursday.
