Library hosting limerick writing contest

LEETONIA- The Friends of the Leetonia Community Public Library will host a limerick writing contest at 6 p.m. March 21 at the library.

All ages are invited to participate and submit up to five limericks. Everyone who submits a limerick can pick a gift from the "Pot of Gold."

Limericks are short, humorous poems of five lines in which the first, second and fifth lines rhyme with each other, and the third and fourth lines, which are shorter, form a rhymed couplet.

Gospel Choir will perform Saturday

SALEM - Kent State University's Gospel Choir will perform a free concert at 4 p.m., Saturday at the Kent State City Center in Salem.

The choir is directed by Dr. Linda B. Walker, a professor at Kent State University. Founded in 1996 by Walker, the Kent State Gospel Choir has earned an excellent local, regional, national and international reputation. In 2011, the choir was invited to perform at the Prague Gospel Festival.

Choir members include students, faculty, staff and members of the community. While its members may vary each semester, Walker's consistent values and expectations help the choir uphold its reputation. The choir will perform a diverse selection of gospel music, reflecting the diversity of its members and their varied backgrounds.

The concert will take place in the auditorium of the City Center, located at 230 N. Lincoln Ave., in Salem.

Beloit firefighters sponsoring fish fry

BELOIT - The public is invited to the all-you-can-eat fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Beloit Volunteer Fire Department, 17893 E. Fifth St. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10.

Team Five of St. Paul sponsoring Banquet

SALEM - Team Five of St. Paul Church will sponsor next week's Banquet in Salem from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building.

The menu offers chicken noodle soup, penne pasta with meatballs, green beans, salad, fresh fruits and vegetables and ice cream sundaes. Additional sponsors are needed. For more information call Patty Colian at 330-831-2169.

United Class of 1963 plans reunion meeting

HANOVERTON - The United High School Class of 1963 has scheduled a reunion planning meeting at noon March 6 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

Family to Family program planned March 6

LISBON - National Alliance Mental Illness of Columbiana County chapter has announced that the Mental Health Counseling Center will host the Family to Family program beginning March 6 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for 12 weeks.

Registration is required at 330-424 5772 or 330-332-4863. The workshop includes problem solving, empathy and communications skills in an effort to end the stigma associated with mental illness.

Fairfield-Waterford HS 1960 class will meet

COLUMBIANA - The Fairfield-Waterford High School Class of 1960 will meet for a coverdish luncheon at 11:30 a.m. March 7 at the Woodland Run Clubhouse.

Winona Historical Society will meet

WINONA - The Winona Area Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 7 at the Evangelical Friends Church.

Goshen Home Ext. will meet March 8

SALEM Goshen Home Extension plans to meet at 11 a.m. March 8 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

Negley Masons serving fish and chips dinner

NEGLEY - A fish and chips dinner is slated from 4 to 7 p.m. March 9 at Negley Masonic Lodge, 50873 Richardson Ave. Cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under. Extra pieces of fish may be purchased at $2 each. Carryout orders are available.

Memorial Building Spring Bazaar is March 16

SALEM - The Salem Memorial Building Association is hosting its annual Spring Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 15 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 16. Eight-foot tables and two chairs are provided for vendors at a cost of $25 for both days. Various crafts, candies, baked goods and other interesting items will be available for purchase. To reserve a table or for more information call the Memorial Building at 330-332-5512.

Lisbon kindergarten registration scheduled

LISBON - Parents of children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, 2013, may register their children for kindergarten from March 18-22 at the Lisbon Board of Education Office, 317 N. Market St. Appointments may be made by calling the board office at 330-424-7714.

Screenings for kindergarten will be held April 24 and 25. Appointments will be made at the time of registration.

Registration for the Lisbon Preschool will also be available at this time. There are a limited number of places available. The 4-year-olds will be considered first with 3-year-olds taking the remaining spots. Applications are available at the board office.

Parents enrolling children in Lisbon Schools must bring a photo ID of themselves, the child's original birth certificate, original Social Security card, immunization records, proof of residency, and custody paper, if applicable.
