LEETONIA- A fire fueled by high winds and blowing snow destroyed a Washington Street duplex Thursday morning.
The Leetonia Fire Department, assisted by the Green Township Fire Department, responded to the building at 384 Washington St. at 7:12 a.m., Leetonia Fire Chief Larry Hephner Jr. said.
Hephner and a representative from the state fire marshal's office determined the blaze started in the attic above the two apartments. The cause of the fire in still undetermined, but does not appear to be suspicious, he said.
Hephner said half the duplex was vacant.
The residents of the other apartment, Tammy Hines and her sons Jacob and Zack, were not at home when firefighters arrived to find the structure engulfed with flames shooting through the roof.
Firefighters were on scene for approximately three hours, Hephner said.
Leetonia responded to the scene with 12 firefighters and two medics. Green Township assisted with five firefighters and a medic.
In another fire call, Leetonia crews responded to a dryer fire at 508 Columbia St. at 9:52 a.m. Wednesday. Hephner said that the fire spread into a wall, but was confined to the immediate area.
