EAST LIVERPOOL - A 47-year-old Michigan man was shot late Thursday night at a Dresden Avenue home after two men wearing masks entered the residence and demanded drugs and money.
The victim, who was not identified, was shot in the hand and also suffered a head injury when he tried to fight off the armed men at 1060 Dresden Avenue.
He was taken to the local emergency room then transferred to a Pittsburgh hospital.
Five people present in the home corroborated his account that the two men came in and demanded the drugs and money, with one of the men carrying a Tech 9 and the other a semi-automatic handgun.
Police described a Tech 9 as a type of machine gun or Uzi and said they consider the men armed and dangerous, believing they are still in the area.
After the victim told them he did not have any drugs, a fight ensued and a shot was fired.
The men stole money and the keys to the victim's vehicle, a maroon GMC Envoy with damage to the left rear. At the time of the theft, it was bearing a Michigan license plate number 5KWC14.
"We're actively looking for that vehicle," Detective Don Fickes said, emphasizing anyone who spots it needs to call police, not try to stop it.
Three small children were also inside the residence when the shooting took place.
The rental property is owned by Debra Todd of Irish Ridge Road and is occupied by tenants Thomas and Angel Redman. Police said people had recently been complaining about a high volume of traffic in and out of the residence.
A small amount of suspected heroin was found on the ground in front of the home following the incident Thursday night. It will be sent to the state for testing with possible charges to follow.
The victim was concerned about his girlfriend staying at a local motel, and police went there, where a search turned up suspected heroin, which will also be sent for testing.
The girlfriend, Linda Shaw of Detroit, was charged with drug possession.
