SALEM - William Green Downing, 84, of Salem, died Wednesday night, Jan. 16, 2013, in the emergency room of the Salem Community Hospital.
He was born Sept. 16, 1928, in Pittsburgh, the son of the late Harry and Harriet (Kurtz) Downing.
Mr. Downing was a 1946 graduate of Avonworth High School in Ben Avon, Pa., and attended Thiel and Geneva College. He worked as sales manager for AT&T in Pittsburgh for 33 years. He attended the First United Methodist Church in Salem and served with the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948.
He was fascinated with history and enjoyed reading books on history and church heritage. He was also a private pilot.
His wife, Agnes Marie (Babcock) Downing, whom he married Jan 26, 1951, survives him, along with a daughter, Christina Rembert of Malvern, Ohio; three grandchildren, Rachelle (Mike) Virgin, Ronnie Rembert and Rory Rembert; and three great-grandchildren, Michael Virgin, Mitchell Virgin and Ella Grace Virgin.
Preceding him in death was a son-in-law, Ronald Rembert II in 2009; a sister, Helen Sharp; and two brothers, Harry Jr. and Robert Downing.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug George officiating.
Calling hours will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home prior to the services. Burial will be at Franklin Square Cemetery.
