Vera Witmer

COLUMBIANA - Vera Witmer, 86, of Columbiana, passed away Tuesday evening at St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center, surrounded by her family.

She was born on Nov. 14, 1926, in Salem, the daughter of John and Ida (Weaver) Horst, and was a lifelong area resident.

Vera was a homemaker. She was a member of Midway Mennonite Church, where she and Vernon served on the Leadership Team and were Mennonite youth sponsors for many years. She was also a past Sunday school teacher and a past Mary Dorcas Circle member.

She also volunteered her time with Meals on Wheels, Ten Thousand Villages, and was also an auxiliary member of the Gideons.

Along with her husband, Vera enjoyed growing melons and also grew and sold Christmas trees. She also enjoyed making wreaths to share with family and friends. In her spare time, she loved to travel and spend winters in Florida with her husband.

Vera was well known in the local area for her hospitality and willingness to help those in need in any way she could.

Vera leaves to cherish her precious memory a daughter, Lois (John) Sauder of Lake Mary, Fla.; three sons, Vernon (Bonnie) Witmer of Elizabethtown, Pa., Richard (Margie) Witmer of Columbiana and Donald (Roxie) Witmer of Columbiana; her sister, Ruth Horst of Goshen, Ind.; two brothers, James Horst of Leetonia and John (Elsie) Horst of Sarasota, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death on Sept. 4, 2008, by her husband, Vernon D. Witmer, whom she married on June 12, 1949.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Midway Mennonite Church with Pastor Dan Coburn officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana and one hour prior to the services Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Midway Mennonite Cemetery.

The family would like to thank St. Mary's staff for the loving care given to Vera and Vernon in their later years.
