Salem 1939 lunch canceled

SALEM - The Salem High School Class of 1939 has canceled its luncheon on Wednesday.

Beaver Local BOE to meet

LISBON - Beaver Local Board of Education's organizational/regular meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in room two at the high school.

Salem Eagles offer pancakes

SALEM - The public is invited to a haystack breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Jan. 12 at the Salem Eagles Club. Cost is $5. A dance follows from 9 p.m. to midnight. Music is provided by Damaged Goods.

MetroParks board to meet

CANFIELD - The regular meeting of the Board of Park Commissioners of Mill Creek MetroParks begins at 6 p.m. Jan. 14 at the MetroParks Farm on state Route 46.

Radio classes offered

SALEM - Amateur radio entry level classes, provided by the Salem Area Amateur Radio Association, start at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at the home of Ginger Grilli, 1530 E. State St. Registration is necessary by calling 330-549-3051.

LISBON - Family members, caregivers and friends of people suffering with a mental illness are invited to the National Alliance on Mental Illness support group meeting at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 14 and 28 in the multipurpose room at the Counseling Center on state Route 154. SALEM - The Salem High School Class of 1952 plans to meet for lunch at noon Jan. 16 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

Financial aid meeting set

EAST PALESTINE - An informational meeting regarding financial aid for higher education begins at 7 p.m. Jan. 16 in the East Palestine High School Media Center. Parents of students planning higher education are urged to attend. Information, forms and other materials regarding financial aid will be available.

LISBON - The David Anderson High School Class of 1957 plans to meet for breakfast at 10 a.m. Jan. 17 at the Taste of Country.

Churches planning BLAST

SALEM - Building Leaders And Sharing Talents (BLAST) is a annual event for teens in northeastern Ohio area Nazarene churches. Events range from sporting events to singing, art, photography, preaching, etc.

The event kicks off at 5 p.m. Jan. 25 with registration at the First Church of the Nazarene in Salem, followed at 6:30 p.m. with the opening celebration and 7:30 p.m. with athletics and arts and crafts. Events continue from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the swimming pool at the Salem Community Center; and depart to hotels at 12:30 p.m.

Opening worship starts at 9 a.m. Jan. 26 at the Columbiana Church of the Nazarene, 330 N. Elm St., followed at 9:30 a.m. with break-out sessions and youth leader training; 10:30 a.m., music/creative ministries/academic events (competition time); 2 p.m., president's report, elections and awards; and concludes at 3:30 p.m.

SALEM - The Salem High School Class of 1959 will meet for lunch at noon Jan. 12 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

Tax clinic help offered

LISBON - The Family and Community Resource Center is taking appointments for the Feb. 2 tax clinic at the Community Center at 134 S. Market St. Tax appointment sessions are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Ohio Benefit Bank online tax process is a free service provided to those making $60,000 and below. Typically refunds are received in seven to 10 business days if directly deposit into a bank account. Several other tax clinics are scheduled at various locations in the county. Church Women to meet

SALEM - Mark Altomore will speak when Church Women United meet on Jan. 28 in the parlor at the education building at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The 1 p.m. fellowship will be hosted by women from the First Presbyterian and First Baptist churches. Altomore has been with Lamb's House, a Bible counseling ministry, since 2002. Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month. All women of all faiths and denominations are welcome.

Pumpkin seminar planned

CANFIELD - The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers will host its giant pumpkin growing seminar from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Millcreek MetroParks- McMahon Hall, across from the Canfield Fairgrounds.

To register, call Parks Garden Center at 330-533-7278. Admission is free and giant pumpkin seeds will be available. The class, taught by Tim Parks, will cover seed selection, soils, fertility, pests, pollination, pruning and irrigation. The group holds weigh-offs with divisions for heaviest pumpkin, tomato, watermelon, Halloween-type pumpkin, longest gourd and largest sunflower head.

'Hoops for troops' planned

BEAVER TOWNSHIP- Lexi Naples and Allison Oliver, senior members of the South Range Raider Girls Basketball team, will host a "Hoops For Troops" fund raiser to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project at the varsity girls basketball game versus East Palestine at 7 p.m. Thursday at South Range High School. Kady Richards, 2013 Military Child of The Year Finalist by Operation Homefront, will open the event with the National Anthem. Fund raising efforts will include Hoops For Troops T-shirts for $10 (free admission to game with purchase), "Wounded Warrior Armbands" for $5, half-court shooting contest for $1 (winner receives a $10 Pizza Hut gift card) and Wounded Warrior pins and stickers available for donation box contributors.

Lisbon radio meeting set

LISBON - Members of the Lisbon Area Amateur Radio Association will discuss possibly changing meeting dates at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Columbiana County Emergency Management Agency, 215 S. Market St. For further information call 330-222-1724. Guests are welcome.
