Charges due in Leetonia school assault

LEETONIA - Charges are pending against a Leetonia High School student following what school officials are calling a spontaneous attack on another student Monday morning.

Police Chief John Soldano responded to the school at approximately 7:30 a.m. after the student reportedly struck a ninth-grade student in the face with a chair in the cafeteria prior to the start of classes. Soldano said the result of his investigation has been forwarded to the juvenile prosecutor's office for possible charges.

According to the victim's stepfather, Tom Durbin, the victim had been bullied and threatened by the suspect who had already been disciplined for prior actions against the victim. He said his stepson sustained a broken nose and was bleeding from the mouth and nose after being struck in the face with a metal chair in front of several students and at least five teachers.

Durbin claimed that his stepson was not immediately assisted with his injury.

Principal Troy Radinsky confirmed the incident and said he has punished the suspect, but said he could not elaborate on what occurred or what the punishment is. He did note that the incident is isolated to the two students.

Radinsky also said that teachers were assigned to the area at the time of the incident, and that they responded as soon as the issue was understood.

"This wasn't a fight, it was a spontaneous action," he said. "There was no recognition of the injury at first. There was considerable help by the staff once they understood the situation. I feel very strongly that no one has as caring a teaching staff as we do."

Radinsky said the school has a policy regarding such actions and that the administration followed the policy "to the hilt."

"We definitely don't take any of these situations lightly," he said. "We're taking the necessary actions to ensure that our students are as safe as possible."
