Feeling right at home: BL takes 2nd place in annual Hoppel Tourney

CALCUTTA - The Beavers felt right at home.

Hosting the 35th annual Everett Hoppel Memorial Wrestling Tournament, Beaver?Local finished second overall in the 10-team field on Saturday.

Minerva won the event with 226 points, followed by Beaver?Local (204), Lorain (180), Austintown Fitch (174), Massilon?(167), East Liverpool?(134), Indian Creek?(88), Ridgewood (83), Edison (80) and Wellsville (41).

"Coming in, we knew it was a tough field with some really good teams,"?Beaver?Local coach Jordan Williams said. "I was happy with the way we wrestled. I was hoping for a little better from a couple guys, but overall we got better and did what we needed to do."

Individually, Beaver Local crowned two champions on the day.

Josh Henderson won the 113-pound title with a 13-1 major decision over Lorain's Marcus Cruz.

At 138 pounds, Daniel Hasson took first place for the Beavers with a pin of Massilon's Jarrod Mazzon in 1:34.

Four Beaver?Local grapplers came up short in the championship match and finished in second place. Those included Ron Foster (132 pounds), Josh Barber (145), Dan Lattanzio (170) and Cody Green?(220).

Green lost in the finals to Wellsville's lone place, Seth Bloor.

Dustin Martsolf placed third for Beaver?Local at 120 pounds.

For East Liverpool, two wrestlers took second place including Alex Potts?(106) and John Miscuk?(195).

Miscuk's finals loss came at the hands of a Hoppel family member in Minerva's Harrison Hoppel who pinned Miscuk in 0:58.

Also placing for the Potters was Frankie Williams (3rd-132), Kris Bailey (4th-145), Mack Miller (4th-152) and Chad Reed?(4th-160).

"We love the Hoppel Tournament," Williams said. "The kids love it and we love hosting it. It's a good opportunity to recognize the sport here at Beaver?Local. We love to have a part in carrying on that great Hoppel tradition."
