CALCUTTA - The time has come.
The annual Hoppel Tournament will be held starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Beaver Local High School.
In the past, there has been a lot of great action at the tournament, and this year's tournament figures to be no different.
The Hoppel tournament is a long standing tradition at Beaver Local that has been held the past 35 years. The tournament is able to be held because of the support of the Hoppel family.
The Hoppels have been deeply involved in community activities for more than 70 years. Their contributions to the area go well beyond the wrestling mats. They take great pride in helping the area where they have earned six-state wrestling championships among their family.
The family holds the Everett Hoppel Memorial Wrestling tournament annually to honor their late father, who was killed in an industrial accident. This year's tournament features local teams such as the host Beaver Local, Wellsville, Indian Creek, Edison and East Liverpool.
The tournament will also have powers such as Massillon Washington, Lorain Southview, Minerva, Austintown Fitch and Ridegewood.
Minerva features a member of the Hoppel family in Harrison Hoppel.
This year, Beaver Local returns two-state qualifiers in seniors Ron Foster and Josh Henderson.
The Beavers have gotten off to a fast start this year with nine placers at the Cambridge Invitational and scoring a big win against Boardman. Fans can purchase tickets to the morning or the afternoon sessions as well as an all day pass. All day passes are available for $10.
The finals will start approximately one hour after the final round of action.
