LEETONIA- The Leetonia school board Thursday named Louis Ramunno as acting superintendent while current superintendent Rob Mehno is on a medical leave of absence. Mehno will be off for approximately six to eight weeks beginning Monday.
Ramunno, a consultant with the Columbiana County Educational Service Center, is committed to being visible and accessible at the school, according to Mehno, and will be on site every day. His services are being offered by the ESC at no cost to the district, Mehno noted.
A former Leetonia schools superintendent and educator, Ramunno retired as superintendent from West Branch Local Schools and has since served as interim superintendent at several local districts including Salem and Southern Local.
In other business, the board hired Terry May Jr. as district grounds custodian retroactive to April 1 through Nov. 30 and Sean Knight as a Title 6B tutor for the remainder of the school year.
The board also approved supplemental coaching contracts for the 2012-13 school year for Tricia Scott, assistant softball; Vincent Painter, assistant baseball; and Sean Knight, assistant track; as well as 2013-14 contracts for Matt Altomare, varsity football; and Walter Anchors, eighth-grade volleyball.
The board also approved Mark Edwards as a trustee to the Leetonia Community Public Library Board of Trustees.
Also at the meeting, board President John Rydarowicz reported that senior Homecoming Queen Nikki Halverstadt has been named as the Ohio representative to America's Homecoming Queen team and will participate in the Liberty Bowl Parade Dec. 31 in Memphis. She was nominated by high school Guidance Counselor Mary Rice.
The reorganizational meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 10 in Room 20 of the K-12 Campus.
