Lisbon BOE to meet today

LISBON - The Lisbon Exempted Village Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. today in the board room at the BOE office.

The Educational Study Committee plans to meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the BOE office.

Fredricktown Bridge closed for weld repairs this week

ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP - The Fredricktown Bridge on Midland-Fredricktown Road will be closed for minor weld repairs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

'Rocking for a Cause' fund raiser to aid food pantry

SALEM - The "Rocking for a Cause this Season" fund raiser for the Salem Community Food Pantry will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Salem Little Quakers Hall, 1688 S. Lincoln Ave. Music will be provided by Theaz Guyz. Snacks and finger foods will be provided. Cost is $7 per couple or $5 per person. A silent auction will be held featuring donations from local merchants.

'Twas the Night Before' 5k set in Firestone Park Saturday

COLUMBIANA - The Siembida and Boggs Philanthropic Foundation is sponsoring the 'Twas the Night Before' 5k in Firestone Park at 5 p.m. Saturday. This race will have runners and walkers alike racing through Firestone Park while it is lit up with one million Christmas lights courtesy of the Joy of Christmas light show. Runners will receive a free entry to the light show the evening of the race. Monetary proceeds from the race will benefit the restoration of the track surrounding the football field in the park. Race day registration begins at 3:30 p.m. at Pavilion #1.

In addition to raising money, the foundation is collecting toys and non-perishable foods to benefit the Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program at the Way Station in Columbiana. Saturday is the deadline for donations to be dropped off in pavilion #1. In addition to toys these children are also in need of clothing. According to Carla Sukosd, Way Station program chairperson, "Tweens and teens are often not adopted and sometimes receive very little." In addition to a few specific unnamed families the S & B Foundation is adopting, the foundation is aiming to find items for the tween and teen age groups. Gift cards to places like Target, Old Navy and Kohl's were suggested as favorites.

"We are collecting non-perishable foods of all types, not just canned foods to donate to the Way Station," said Crystal Siembida Boggs. The food items will be given to the families in need during the December food giveaway. For more information or to drop off donations call 330-482-9105.

United Local to host annual Christmas Concert Sunday

HANOVERTON - The United Local Vocal Music Department will hold its annual Christmas concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the high school auditorium. Performing will be seventh and eighth-grade choirs, Touch of Gold, High School Mixed Chorus and Concert Choir and Flight. Admission is free. A cookie sale also will be held.

New Year's Eve Victory Gospel Jubilee tickets offered

NORTH LIMA - Free tickets are available for the New Year's Eve Victory Gospel Jubilee to be held on Dec. 31 at the North Lima Business Complex Auditorium.

National southern gospel artist Jerry Garcia will be the headliner for the evening of music hosted by the Golden Street Singers. Also on the program will be the Stillwater trio. Garcia, who has been in the music ministry since he sang his first song in church as a young boy, performs hundreds of concerts each year, sings on gospel cruises and has appeared at the National Quartet Convention. Garcia and his wife, Sarah, share a special ministry of love to children with severe, even terminal illness.

Stillwater members Ed and Ed Woodard have been singing in groups for more than 30 years. They are joined by lead singer Enola Grovesteen. The Golden Street Singers have hosted all of the Victory Gospel Jubilees.

A buffet dinner by the Hen House Cafe will be available from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $12. Singing begins at 7 p.m. Reservations for dinner can be made when you order your free tickets. Breakfast buffet planned at Salem Masonic Temple

SALEM-A public breakfast buffet will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Dec. 22 at the Salem Masonic Temple, 788 E. State St.

Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2. The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea. The building is equipped with a handicapped accessible elevator.

Columbiana Career Center plans cosmetology academy

LISBON - The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center's Adult Education department is opening a new cosmetology academy and is in the process of ordering supplies and getting the lab ready for the adult students. Salem Community Center to host swim lessons in January

SALEM - The Salem Community Center will host another session of its swim lesson program beginning Jan. 12 and running every Saturday, ending on March 2. Six Learn to Swim levels are available, along with a Mommy and Me level for infants and their parent. Instructors are American Red Cross WSI certified with years of experience. Alliance Hospital's Care

Center aids Sandy victims

ALLIANCE - The residents at Alliance Community Hospital's Community Care Center (CCC) are making a difference in the lives of others this holiday season. After Hurricane Sandy devastated the East Coast, residents were determined to find a way to help those affected. Throughout November, they sold Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies in the CCC main activity room to raise money. The money raised by the residents was recently donated to the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund at the Union Avenue Methodist Church.

"Every two to three months the residents do a community outreach project," said Lori Underwood, CCC activity director. "They feel very blessed and want to help those who may be going through difficult times."
