SALEM FIRE

December 7, 2012
Salem News

- Firefighters were called at 8:31 a.m. Thursday to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 291 S. Broadway Ave., where a person was stuck in a stalled elevator. Elevator keys were used to rescue the person.

- Firefighters pumped water out of a basement in the 200 block of Ohio Avenue after being notified by the apartment owner at 2:31 p.m. Wednesday about a flood due to a water pipe break. The gas was shut off to one of the furnaces and one hot water tank because the pilot light was extinguished by the water.

- A fire was put out after the department was called at 12:53 p.m. Wednesday to the 2500 block of East State Street for an open burning complaint which turned out to be an illegal fire. A person at the scene reported being hired by the owner to clean up the property.

- An odor of smoke was reported at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday by a resident in the 200 block of Hawley Avenue where a light odor of smoke on the first floor was detected and appeared to be coming from the basement. She had waited 20 minutes before calling the fire department. The basement was checked with the thermal imaging camera, but nothing was found. The furnace was also working okay, but the resident said they were using the dryer around the same time the odor began. The odor of smoke was coming from the dryer, so it was unplugged and the gas turned off. The resident was told to have the dryer checked and not to overload it in the future.
