DAMASCUS - Matt Manley, formerly West Branch Middle School principal was the guest speaker when the Damascus Ruritan Club met in November. Dinner was served to 23 members and guest by the ladies of the Damascus United Methodist Church. Manley spoke about his new role with the West Branch School System as staff development coordinator. He will train the West Branch Local staff in areas such as instruction, technology, testing and teacher evaluation. Paul Givens was installed as a new member and placed on the Environmental Committee, chaired by Al Lutz.
The annual Ohio District Ruritan Convention was held Nov. 10 at the First Christian Church in Alliance. Roger Smith gave an update on the Light-Up-Damascus event on Dec. 8. The board presented three recommendations to the membership, to make monetary donations to the Goshen- Butler Community Fund, the Damascus United Methodist Church, and the Light-Up Damascus Project, all of which were approved by the membership.
The Ruritan National Convention will be held Jan. 24-26, 2013, in Covington, Ky. He encouraged members to take advantage of the close proximity of distance for travel to the convention. The club's annual Christmas party will be held Dec. 13 at the Damascus United Methodist Church. A social hour begins at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Members rang bells for the Salvation Army on Nov. 23 at Thorne's in the College Plaza, Alliance.
