W. Va. man pleads guilty to fraud, illegal food stamp use

LISBON - Hassan A. Alhawshabi, 49, Newell, W.Va., pleaded guilty in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court to one count of telecommunications fraud and two counts of illegal use of supplemental nutrition assistance benefits program.

Court documents state he used a food stamp card belonging to Velinda Cunningham on Jan. 2, 2011 without her permission to purchase $408 in food products at the Calcutta Walmart. Similarly, at the same store, he used a food stamp card belonging to Brandy Cottrill to purchase $140 in food on March 5, 2011. Finally, Alhawshabi reportedly used Cunningham's food card benefits to secure $350 in food products for his business.

He faces up to three years in prison and a fine of $7,500. Sentencing is set for Feb. 4.
