Soup lunch in Franklin Square

FRANKLIN SQUARE - A soup luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Franklin Square United Methodist Church, 37615 Olde State Route 558. A selection of soup, sandwiches and pie will be available. Soup to go will also be available.

PERI?59 to meet for lunch

LISBON - Chapter 59 Columbiana County Public Employee Retirees Inc. will meet for lunch at noon Nov. 12 at Taste of Country. The business session follows at 1 p.m. featuring a speaker from the Christina House.

Ruritan clubs hold dinner

LISBON - The Fairfield, Hanover Township and Lisbon Ruritan clubs held a dinner on Oct. 13 at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center, to celebrate each of their 60th anniversary. Ruritan is a national non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving communities and building a better America through fellowship, goodwill and community service. Members from the three clubs welcomed guest from both the state and national level. Some of the guest included: Jayson Duncan 2011 national president; Donna Bricker, 2012 Ohio district governor; Dave Freshly, national Ruritan Foundation trustee; Karl Kiener, Ohio District Foundation chair; Frank Nirschl, Ohio district treasurer, and many past governors and office holders. During the evening members and guests heard about Floyd Lower who helped start all the clubs and was known as "the Father and Pioneer of Ruritan in Ohio." Also, the Lisbon club honored Wilbur "Willie" Cullar, who passed away earlier this year. Many of his family were in attendance and were presented a plaque in his name as a Ruritan Forever.

Unity Grange Halloween

EAST PALESTINE -Unity Grange recently held its Halloween party and serving cider and doughnuts to the ghosts and goblins present. Lecturer, Marge Sponcil, presented a Halloween program with members and guests making skeletons and decorated pumpkins and a candy quiz was a challenge to all.

Unity Grange members, Harry and Virginia Foster, will be representing Columbiana County as delegates to the Ohio State Grange Convention in Columbus.

Plans are being finalized for a holiday open house at the grange from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days. The public is invited to attend. The grange also has round and square dances on the third Friday of each month, from 8 to 11 p.m., from October through May.

R-Weigh holds meetings

SALEM - The R-Weigh weight groups met at 1 and 5 p.m. Monday at Faith Chapel. Good losers for the week were JoAnne Bogdan and Jeni Alwood. Roni Fauver, Carol Held and Marlene Shirilla were the goalies for the week. Rita Cecil and Fauver won the can-do monetary drawings. Bogdan earned the eight weeks of losing monetary award. Linda Lude and Chris Learn will present a program at the evening meeting next week. Starting Monday, the members staying the same or losing each week in November will get $1. Gainers or absent members will stuff their group's turkeys with $1. Members losing their designated pounds on Nov. 26 will share their "turkey's stuffing." Goal members will do the same with their turkey. The afternoon Christmas party will be held on Dec. 3 at Adele's Place. The evening party follows on Nov. 19 at Das Dutch Haus in Columbiana.

Winona Ruritans meet

WINONA-Chuck Bandy was a guest when 27 members of the Winona Ruritan Club met Oct. 23. Donovan Winn gave the invocation. Members of the Hazel Circle served dinner. Bob Doyle gave the Sept. treasurer's report and a preliminary report of the Oct. 13 breakfast. Vice President Homer Althouse thanked all club members, wives, and patrons for helping to make the breakfast another success.

Approximately 465 people were served and 1,090 pounds of sausage and 191 pans of scrapple were sold. Chris Stamp moved to donate to the following: Goshen Butler Community Fund, Salem Salvation Army, Hanoverton Salvation Army, United Community Food Basket, Lone Rangers 4-H Club, United 4-Hers 4-H Club and Winona Volunteer Fire Department. Homer Huprich moved to donate to the Willow Grove Grange. Secretary Lee Stamp announced the 2012 Ohio District Fall Convention is scheduled for Nov. 10.
