LEETONIA- The Leetonia Community Public Library will host local author Glenn Downing at 6 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the experiences chronicled in his novel "Global Warring and the Land of Zinj." A fighter pilot in Vietnam, Downing has travelled the world over and served as a Marine in several conflicts. Cookies and coffee will be served.
Ladies Auxiliary hosting Christmas auctions
WASHINGTONVILLE- The Washingtonville VFW Ladies Auxiliary will host two Christmas auctions at 5 p.m. Nov. 3 and Dec. 1 at the VFW Post home on County Line Road. Doors open at 3 p.m. The sale will be conducted by Dick and Cheryl Zuti and feature brand name toys, tools, collectibles, decorations, wrapping paper, gifts for men and women and more. Boy Scouts hosting benefit spaghetti dinner
SALEM - Boy Scout Troop 2 is hosting a spaghetti dinner fund raiser on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 244 S. Broadway Ave. The public is invited from 4 to 7 p.m. The menu offers spaghetti and meatballs, salad, Italian bread, homemade dessert, coffee, tea or punch. Cost is $7 and free for children 6 and under. In addition to the dine-in service, a convenient, drive-thru carryout is offered at the church by driving up to the south portico.
New Waterford Lions Club serving dinner
NEW WATERFORD - The New Waterford Lions Club's all-you-can-eat roast beef dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Crestview High School. Advance tickets are $9 for adults and $4.50 for children. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Kent departments sponsoring The Banquet
SALEM - The Banquet in Salem will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building. Next week's sponsor is the nursing and radiology departments at Kent State University, Salem campus. The menu offers tomato soup, Swedish meatballs and noodles, green beans, vegetable tray, fresh fruit, rolls, cookies and ice cream. Additional sponsors are needed. SCH, SCC offering refresher driving course
SALEM - Salem Community Hospital and the Salem Community Center are co-sponsoring the AARP 55 Alive Driver Safety Program from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 26 at the SCC, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave.
A refresher course for drivers 50 and older, topics include defensive driving techniques, monitoring one's driving ability, avoiding distractions, use of automotive safety features and effects of medication on driving. Participants also learn how to adjust their driving to accommodate age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time.
The class fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Course graduates may be eligible for discounted auto insurance rates. Pre-registration is required by calling 330-332-5885.

Christmas Giveaway sign-ups planned
COLUMBIANA - Sign-ups will continue for the Adopt-a-Family Christmas Giveaway from 9 to 11 a.m. or 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Way Station, 769 Springfield Road. This program is open to families living in Columbiana, Rogers and Negley (Beaver Local Schools only).
Families living in East Liverpool, Wellsville, Salineville and Calcutta may sign-up from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 24 at the Avondale Baptist Church in East Liverpool.
The giveaway is open to families with children from birth to 18 years (children must still be in high school) who must sign-up and bring birth certificates for each child and a utility bill or some other form of proof of residency. Lisbon Salvation Army accepting applications
LISBON - The Lisbon Salvation Army will accept applications from families in need of Christmas assistance from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 25, 26 and 30 at the Lisbon office located at 7860 Lincole Place.
Applications must be completed during these times or assistance cannot be guaranteed. Due to a lack of funding, Lisbon Salvation Army cannot promise assistance for children 13 years and older.
This year, the service area will include residence of Lisbon, Kensington, Winona, Elkton, Homeworth, North Georgetown, and West Point (area codes 44432, 44427, 44493, 44415, 44634, 44665 and 44492). Only the parent or guardian may apply and he/she must bring birth certificates for the children and proof of residency (utility bill, current lease agreement, etc.) when applying. COLUMBIANA - The Fairfield Ruritan Club will host its 52nd annual barbecue chicken dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Grace Church on South Main Street in Columbiana. Dine-in or carryout service is available.

Storybook Museum hosting party
SALEM - Reservations are still being accepted for the Salem Storybook Museum's Halloween party, "A Halloween Spook-tacular!" to be held from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at Kent State University City Center, 230 N. Lincoln Ave. Cost is $5 per child.
Reservations are necessary and may be made by calling 330-332-4723. Activities include witches reading stories to the children, a hands-on food project, an art project, refreshments and a take-home gift.
Children will also be told about the museum's art collection and will view some of the artwork. The program is geared for children ages 5 to 10 who are encouraged to dress up in their favorite Halloween costume. If the weather permits, there will be a costume parade on the plaza in front of the building.
The Halloween party is limited to 25 children. Parents are invited to stay at the party and enjoy the refreshments. Guests are asked to enter the building from the rear of the property.

Lisbon VFW hosting fry, dinner on Nov. 3
LISBON - The public is invited to a steak fry and chicken dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4111, 210 E. Lincoln Way.
Dinners include a salad, baked potato or fresh cut fries, roll and coffee. A dance follows from 8 to 11 p.m. Music will be provided by The Nobody's. Admission to the dance is $5, or free with purchase of a meal. Reservations are due by Nov. 2, however, walk-ins are welcome.
