LEETONIA- Village Council Wednesday night accepted bids for renovations at the Fire Hall.
Council accepted a bid of $12,975 from Steve Fisher of Salem to repair the roofs at the station, tearing off and replacing shingles and replacing any damaged boards underneath. Council also accepted a bid of $2,663 from Window World to replace the front window and six others at the station.
Additionally Council approved the purchases of a 2012 pickup with snow plow for $28,296.50 and a 2013 Ford Explorer police cruiser for $28,323 from Donnell Ford through the state cooperative purchasing program. Council also approved the removal of 14 trees, including stumps and grindings, for $11,580.
Brush pick up continues: Superintendent of Utilities Butch Donnalley reported that brush pick up will continue through the end of the month. Brush must be cut and stacked in the same direction in the front curb lawn.
He noted that although the department has not officially started leaf pick up, workers are collecting leaves when they have time in order to get the vac machine ready for use. Leaves must be separate from brush. Combined piles will not be picked up.
Musty smelling water: Donnalley provided an update on the musty smell in customers' water, explaining that Salem administrators are blaming algae bloom being stirred up during the annual turn over of the city's reservoir, which is abnormally low due to the dry summer. He said that the problem is being treated and should clear up soon, after which his department will flush the village's water hydrants.
Halloween schedule: The Halloween Parade is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 29 starting at Elm Street and ending at the Fire Hall. Trick-or-treating is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.
The next regular council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Village Hall.
