Salem boys soccer team nabs victory in first tourney contest

Salem 5, Poland 1

SALEM - The Salem boys soccer team was victorious in its opening tournament contest against Poland 5-1 Tuesday at Reilly Stadium.

Leading Salem was Blake Veglia with two goals and an assist. Brad Larson added two goals and Dan Rumsey had a goal on a penalty kick as well as two assists. Seth Leininger added an assist.

"This was a great team effort tonight," head coach Matt Freeman said. "We possessed the ball well and were able to control the action. Paul Matak did a fantastic job commanding the defense. I'm proud of how they finished the game tonight. Now we have to concentrate on getting ready for our next opponent."

Salem will host Hubbard 1 p.m. Saturday.

West Branch 4, Ravenna 0

BELOIT - The West Branch Warriors are moving on in tournament play after a 4-0 shutout of Ravenna. Kyle Ziegler, Alex Schopher, Justin Schuster and Tyler Ware all scored for West Branch.

Dylan Greenawalt and Nick Sams added assists, and Zach Minich had three saves in goal.

West Branch travels to Canfield Saturday for a 7 p.m. start.

Warren JFK 4, United 2

HANOVERTON - Warren JFK ousted United 4-2 in opening round tournament play Tuesday. Scoring for United was Cole Weikart and Riley Fillman. United ends the year at 10-6-1.


South Range defeats United

SALEM - The South Range Lady Raiders are moving on in Division III volleyball action after a five-set win over United 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-9.

Leading the Lady Raiders was Ashley Shetter with 16 kills, 25 digs, two aces and 11 points. Stevie Taylor added 13 kills, 15 digs, two aces and 10 points. Lynnie Ritter also had seven kills and nine blocks.

South Range (15-7) plays St. Thomas Aquinas 8 p.m. Thursday.

Top-seeded Waterloo defeated Campbell 25-4, 25-14, 25-4 in the first match of the night to advance to the district semifinals against the South Range, St. Thomas winner at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Lady Clips best Leetonia

LISBON - Columbiana is moving on in Division IV tournament play with a 25-12, 25-9, 25-9 win over Leetonia.

Cassidy Stoddard had 18 points, 24 assists and eight aces. Cassandra Sampson added 11 points and nine kills. Lindsey Roncone had nine points, and Shayla Ray had 14 kills.

Kinzie Smith had eight assists and five aces for Leetonia (1-19). Erica Gruzecki added seven points and five kills.

Columbiana (16-6) moves on to face Lisbon 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Lisbon defeats YC

LISBON - The Lisbon Lady Blue Devils dropped Youngstown Christian in tourney action 25-10, 25-11, 25-21. Sarah Boyd had 14 points, five aces and six digs. Ana Sanor added 25 assists, and Kenadee Pezzano had seven kills.

Lisbon (7-16) faces Columbiana 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Sebring defeats East Canton

LISBON - The Sebring Lady Trojans defeated East Canton in opening round volleyball action in Lisbon Tuesday 25-17, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23.

For Sebring, Courtney Maretich had 14 points and three aces. Kelsi Settle added 11 points, seven aces, 11 kills and four blocks, and Elaina Jurica had 17 assists.

Sebring (2-19) moves on to face top-seeded Jackson-Milton at 6 p.m. Thursday.
