COLUMBIANA - The Rev. Michael Alan McCarthy, 59, of Columbiana, Ohio, passed away peacefully at the Hospice House in Poland, Ohio, on Oct. 8, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with prostate and bone cancer.
He was born Jan. 31, 1953, in Chicago, Ill., a son of Jack and June McCarthy.
He grew up in Louisville, Ky., where he attended Holy Spirit Grade School and Trinity High School. Michael attended Duke University on an academic scholarship graduating cum laude in 1975.
Michael work for General Electric in Cleveland in their financial management training program then pursued doctoral studies at Case Western Reserve until he felt the call to seminary in New Haven. While at Yale he formed his own company "Seminary Painters" and paid his tuition working during the summers. He finished his master's of divinity in 1984. Serving several Lutheran congregations in New Haven and Madison, Wisc., he then served in Hickory, N.C., Little Rock, Ark., Charleston, S.C., and was currently serving at the Greenford Lutheran Church in Greenford, Ohio.
He had many spiritual gifts, was a great preacher, teacher, and had a keen sense of discernment. He loved the Lord and will be remembered for his big hearty laugh. Standing 6'4" he filled a room with his presence. He was an avid reader and loved Irish and classical music. As a big Duke fan, many things revolved around sporting events and some sermons were even known to have been shortened during ACC tournament time!
Michael leaves behind to cherish his memory, Catharin, his wife of 22 years; his son, Patrick; daughter, Mary Claire; four brothers and sisters, Thomas McCarthy of Louisville, Ky., Katherine (Frank) Brazel of Marietta, Ga., Peter (Dita) McCarthy of Pass Christian, Miss., and Margaret (Richard) Fraher of Marietta, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Amy (Robert) Stone of Smith Mt. Lake, Va.; brother-in-law, James (Katherine) Coley of Hilton Head, S.C.; and nine nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at the Greenford Lutheran Church in Greenford, Ohio. The funeral will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the church with Pastor Michael Greenler of Ontario, Calif., officiating.
