Roses to the memory of fallen Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel M. McVicker. Yesterday was a somber anniversary for his family. The West Branch graduate was only 20 when he died on Oct. 6, 2005 when serving our country during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was killed by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations against enemy forces near Al Qaim, Iraq. He was our area's only casualty during that military operation. One was too many. Our thoughts go out to family members who have preseved his memory and keep his name out there. That is how it should be. We should never forget the sacrifice. A stretch of US. route 62 bears his name in honor. Memorial scholarships in his name distributed with the support of the community and Sebring American Legion Post 76 now number 22.
