WEST LAFAYETTE - Emily Blaner is headed to the district tournament.
Blaner shot a 79 Wednesday at the Ohio Division II Eastern District Girls Sectional Golf Tournament at River Greens Golf Course to advance to the district tournament.
Blaner finished the day with the third lowest overall score of 79.
"She opened up with a 43," Beaver Local head coach Ed Kurylak said. "She got in a little bit of trouble in the beginning with the weather with the rain, the wind and the cold. She came back on the back 9 to shoot a par 36."
Also for the Beavers, Taylor Plunkett tallied a 99, and Hannah Edwards ended up with a 116.
The top individuals overall were medalist Shelby Thompson and Leah Baughman. Thompson, who is from Claymont, shot a 73. Baughman, who is from Rosecrans, shot a 78.
The top five teams and five individuals not on a qualifying team qualified for the district tournament to be held Monday at Pickaway Country Club in Circelville.
Three teams and three individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the state tournament at the Scarlet and Gray Course at The Ohio State University in Columbus.
"She's got a good shot," Kurylak said. "She is a focused young lady right now."
Blaner put in a lot of work in the offseason to prepare for this time of the year.
"She has been putting in a lot of work with John Talbott, who is her swing instructor," Kurylak said. "They put in practice time daily at the shag range at the Meadows. In the summer, she would play at Turkana with Isaac Davidson from East Liverpool. They would play together.
"She never really plays with girls. She is on the Beaver Local team and plays against guys. I think that helps her a lot. She plays in a lot of tournaments. She plays on the Kenny Novak Tour.
"She has played against the No. 1 girl at Kent State. She has played against a couple of girls from Walsh University.
"Her all-around game keeps improving and improving. She is only a junior. Her hard work has paid off.
"She is a great young lady. She is a pleasant person to be around. She is great for girls' golf in the area. I am happy for her. I'm proud of her. Hopefully, she can take one more step in this journey. I think this is good for golf in the area.
"Obviously, you have the East Liverpool boys getting a lot of accolades, and Emily is putting her mark on girls' golf in the area. I think they are two good groups of kids.
"It would be really nice to see them both go to the state tournament. I really hop they both go to the state tournament."
