South Range BOE to meet

CANFIELD - The South Range Local Board of Education plans to meet in special session at 7 a.m. Friday to consider the purchase of property for public purposes. The meeting is at the South Range Elementary office at 11300 Columbiana Canfield Road.

EP?driver ed class

EAST PALESTINE - East Palestine Driver Education/AAA Driving class will start Oct. 1. Registration forms should be turned in by Friday. For information call 330-692-0763.

Dinner for cancer patient

LISBON - A benefit event for cancer patient Pam Lester of New Waterford will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Csonka's Sports Bar on state Route 45. Live music from the River Hawk Band will be provided from 3 to 6 p.m. There will also be refreshments, a bake sale, Chinese auction, and cornhole, weather permitting.

Mother's Club fund raiser

SALEM - The Salem Junior Mother's Club is sponsoring a fund raiser on Monday at the Salem Bob Evans restaurant. A flyer was recently distributed to all Salem students from kindergarten through ninth grade. Parents are asked to help the club raise money for the children in the community by dining at Bob Evans on Monday and presenting their flyer with their bill. A portion of the total will be donated to the club.

Leetonia 1951 breakfast

LEETONIA - The Leetonia High School Class of 1951 will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. Oct. 2 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

Southern Local BOE

SALINEVILLE - The Southern Local Board of Education meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 2 in room E136 at the high school.

Great Pumpkin Patch

EAST PALESTINE -Centenary United Methodist Church at 40 S. Market St. will hold its annual Great Pumpkin Patch on the front lawn at the church. Various items for sale include pumpkins of all shapes and sizes and other seasonal decorations. The Pumpkin Patch will be open Oct. 6-31. All proceeds go to the United Methodist Youth Fellowship Fund. For information call 330-426-2629.

Fairfield 1959 dinner

COLUMBIANA - The Fairfield-Waterford Class of 1959 will meet for dinner at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at Taste of Country in Lisbon.

Leetonia Historical Society

LEETONIA - The Leetonia/Salem Township Historical Society meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Leetonia Public Library. The program is "Seagoing Cowboys of Columbiana County" presented by Ralph Witmer. The public is welcome to attend. For information call 330-427-6966.

Craft show in Calcutta

CALCUTTA - A fall craft show, sponsored by the United Way of Southern Columbiana, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20 at the YMCA. Anyone interested in participating is asked to contact Diane Johnson at 330-385-2082 or Joan Dodds, chairperson, at 330-385-5600. Space rental is $25, or $30 for a space with a table.

Halloween Zumba class

SALEM - The Salem Community Center is hosting a Halloween Zumba class at 6:15 p.m. Oct. 29. Cost is $3 per person and $2 of each entry will be donated to the Alliance Area Domestic Violence Shelter. Participants are encouraged to wear a costume.

Lepper Library storytimes

LISBON - Storytimes at the Lepper Public Library are slated to begin in October. Preschool storytimes start at 11 a.m. every Tuesday. Family storytimes will be held at 6 p.m. every Thursday. Each storytime will include a variety of stories, crafts, games, and music. All library programs are free.

Concealed carry class

SALEM - A one-day Basic Ohio Concealed Carry class taught by NRA certified instructors will be held on Oct. 21 at the Salem Hunting Club, 549 Indiana Ave. Class begins at 8 a.m. Pre-registration is required. Health care classes

LISBON - Columbiana County Career and Technical Center's ABLE program is offering a free class for any adult considering post-secondary education in the health care field. This fun and interactive class (Medical Terminology Bingo or Alien Genetics, anyone?) covers basic anatomy, medical terminology, math, writing, and study skills. Preparation for the WorkKeys exam can also be included for interested students. Classes will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at CCCTC for six weeks starting on Oct. 1. Dollars for Scholars

EAST LIVERPOOL - Jackman S. Vodrey of East Liverpool, president of the Tri-State Area Citizens' Scholarship Foundation (known as Dollars for Scholars), has announced that the annual board of directors meeting begins at 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at Vodrey's law offices, 517 Broadway, Suite 300.

Dollars for Scholars serves seven school districts: Beaver Local, Wellsville, East Liverpool, Midland, Pa., but incorporated into East Liverpool, South Side, Pa., Western Beaver Pa., and Oak Glen, W. Va.

Applicants are also accepted from American Spirit Academy (formerly East Liverpool Christian School), the Buckeye Online School for Success, the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, and Midland's Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, as long as applicants from those schools reside in the aforementioned districts.

The Board will be discussing the newly-launched payment system available on the foundation's website (DollarsForScholarsOnline.com). This new feature allows both donors and past recipients to make contributions or repayments online. Contributions or payments via check or money order will always be accepted as well.

This Dollars for Scholars chapter is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Since it was founded in 1962 and made its first awards in 1963, the chapter has awarded 5,311 scholarships totaling $5,464,997.

In June, Dollars for Scholars announced that for 2012-13, 54 students were awarded a total of $178,950. The top award this year was $3,500/student, with the majority of recipients being given the top award.
