"I don't know whether the kids ran well or not," East Liverpool head coach Scott Thornberry said. "It was so bad out. The course was just brutal. You had to run up so many hills.
"The kids were happy. They had a blast. They were cover in mud."
As a team, the Potters finished 10th with 210 points.
"We struggled team-wise, but when you have someone win a race of this caliber it is a pretty good meet. It was a good day.
"The times overall were pretty slow. I was expecting that even when we got on the bus in the morning."
Uniontown Lake won the boys' large school title with 48 points. River View placed second with 119 points. Dover ended up placing third with 130 points.
Also for East Liverpool, Jake Densmore ended up 31st, Shae Long 32nd, Chase Mahon 56th, Matt Lucas 90th and Grant Owens 92nd.
"There was a mix of division I and division II schools," Thornberry said. "There was good competition. Massilion was there. Canton McKinley was there. Uniontown Lake was there. They are always a good test.
"There were less than desirable conditions, but it happens every year. It is cross country."
East Liverpool will run again Tuesday at Columbiana.
