SALEM - Charles Earl Hertel, 69, of Salem, died Monday morning, Sept. 3, 2012 at his home following a courageous 9-month battle with cancer.
He was born June 26, 1943 in Salem, Ohio, a son of the late Wilbert E. and Mildred J. (Earl) Hertel.
Mr. Hertel was a 1961 graduate of Salem High School and had joined the U.S. Navy right out of high school where he received the Sailor of the Month Award - Rota, Spain.
He had been a lineman for AT&T for 41 years and was a member of the Salem Elks Lodge #305. He was also a Cleveland sports enthusiast and enjoyed golfing.
His wife, Linda K. Hertel, whom he married Sept. 3, 2003 survives him along with two sons, Greg (Cheryl) Hertel of Bedford, Ohio and Tim (Elaine) Dardy of Madison, Ohio; a daughter, Lisa (Al) Sherrill of Sagamor Hills, Ohio; three stepchildren, Pamela (Chet) Meade of Warren, Jamey (Paige) Solmen of Canfield and Dan (Laura) Solmen of Salem; a sister, Janice Buckman of Kissimmee, Fla.; a brother, Ray (Linda L.) Hertel of Leetonia; three grandchildren, Lauren, Brandon and Jake; and four step-grandchildren.
His parents and his first wife, Dolores Hertel preceded him in death.
Per his request, a memorial celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
