West Branch rally spoiled by New Philadelphia

New Philadelphia 49, West Branch 45

BELOIT - Defense wasn't exactly the name of the game Friday night in Beloit as New Philadelphia racked up 539 total yards and halted a pesky Warriors rally to win 49-45.

West Branch trailed 28-3 in the second quarter but battled back to take a 45-42 lead with 5:01 left in the game. But New Philadelphia answered with just under three minutes to play to nab the win.

Leading the Warriors was Troy James who ran for 192 yards on 22 carries and had four touchdown runs. James was also 7-of-12 passing for 68 yards and a touchdown to Kenny Faulkner. Faulkner also blocked a punt and had four catches for 33 yards. Logan Nagy added 76 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown.

For New Philadelphia (2-0), Jamal Johnson had 324 yards rushing on 33 carries and four touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 124 yards and another score.

West Branch (0-2) hosts Streetsboro next week.

Crestview 31, Beaver Local 6

LISBON - Crestview topped Beaver Local 31-6 Friday on the road.

Leading the Rebels was Nick Blower with 147 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.

Colin Gilbert added 83 yards on 13 carries and was 8-of-14 for 101 yards and two touchdowns, both to Dimitri Gregory who tallied 47 yards on four catches. Matt Hardenbrook added 53 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown and Caleb McGath kicked a 37-yard field goal.

For Beaver Local, Trevel Thompkins had a 52-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Crestview (2-0) wraps up non-conference play next week hosting Southern Local.

Leetonia 23, Mineral Ridge 19

MINERAL RIDGE - Leetonia edged Mineral Ridge 23-19 Friday on the road.

The Bears' Zach VanGiesen had 100 yards on 20 carries including two touchdown runs. Trent Ferry added 44 yards on 12 carries and a 14-yard touchdown scamper.

Leetonia (1-1) will host Mathews next week.

Malvern 20, Western Reserve 3

BERLIN CENTER - Malvern topped Western Reserve 20-3 Friday. Parker Clegg scored the Blue Devils' only points on a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Leading the Devils was Dan Rosati who caught four passes for 96 yards. Tim Cooper added 43 yards on four catches. Nick Allison was 12-of-35 for 170 yards.

Western Reserve (0-2) plays next week at East Palestine.
