SALEM - An Alliance man was cited for a minor misdemeanor of open burning Wednesday after a police officer discovered a rubbish fire outside a business on Mullins Street.

Gary Hunt, 62, was very cooperative and apologized, according to the police report, telling the officer he was unaware of the city ordinance regarding open burning.

An officer on patrol at 10:08 a.m. saw a large amount of black smoke coming from the rear of the business at 383 Mullins Street and found a large pile of pallets and other items. The fire measured 8 feet by 8 feet and was about 5 to 6 feet high. The fire department was called and extinguished the fire.

According to the fire report, the pile of debris included several sheets of plywood, several ceiling tiles and various other plastics and garbage. The police report noted the fire chief wanted a citation issued.
