SALEM - The 2012 Star Trax Night 5K Race will be dedicated to Kathryn Jane "Janie" Cleveland Mowery, longtime junior high track coach and Salem Schools teacher.
She will be honored before the race begins at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4.
Her husband, Bill Mowery, will be the official starter of the race that sends runners through the luminary-lit neighborhoods near Centennial Park. The night race raises money for the Salem High School track and cross country teams.
Online race registration is available until Aug. 2 www.salemx-tramile.org.
Runners may also register the evening of the event at Reilly Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. However, on the night of the race T-shirts will be available only on a first-come basis.
In 2011, a record-setting 618 runner registered for the moonlight race that begins and ends in Reilly Stadium on Pershing Avenue. A total of 72 trophies will be awarded this year to the top male and female runners overall, and the top three runners in 12 age categories.
Janie Mowery began coaching Salem track teams in the mid-1970s as an assistant to Frank Hoopes, who was then the head girls varsity track coach. She also served as the assistant coach for four years when Nancy Miller became the head girls coach. She took a break from coaching in the mid-1980s when her son Matt- now head basketball boys coach at United Local - was born.
In the 1990s, she became the coach of the junior high school girls track team working with her Prospect School teaching colleague, Jeff Craig, who was the boys junior high school coach.
"She just liked working with the kids. She just enjoyed being with the kids," Bill Mowery, said explaining his wife's motivation for her many years of coaching. He remembered with a chuckle that one of the girls early on called her "Coach Hollywood" because of the large sunglasses she wore and the name stuck.
"She touched a lot of kids over the years as she helped them in those formative years," Mowery observed.
Janie Mowery died of cancer on Jan. 18, 2012. She taught in Salem elementary schools for 35 years. In addition to her many years as a track coach, she was involved the First Christian Church and the Salem Junior Mother's Club. She served on the board of the Salem High School Alumni Association and was president of the alumni association from 2006 to 2011.
