SHS Class of 1945 will meet today

SALEM - The Salem High School Class of 1945 plans to meet for lunch at noon today at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

Artisans Festival Committee will meet

LEETONIA -The Leetonia Artisans Festival Committee meeting begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at village hall.

Rummage sale fund raiser scheduled

COLUMBIANA - A rummage sale fund raiser will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 28 E. Park Ave.

Proceeds will be given to the Columbiana High School speech team.

Open house planned at CCC&TS

LISBON -The Adult Education Department will host an open house from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1 at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center. Potential students will have the opportunity to meet with staff and administrators, see classrooms and labs, and view course schedules.

Financial aid representatives will be on hand to assist with scholarships. The CCCTC has recently completed a Health Wing renovation and the welding lab renovation will be complete by the beginning date for school this fall.

Sebring Chamber hosting garage sale

SEBRING -The Sebring Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor its 11th annual garage sale on Aug. 2, 3 and 4 with most sales occurring all three days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The sale is always held the first consecutive Thursday through Saturday of August.

Any Sebring or neighboring resident may have their own sale at their own home. Sellers register their sale to be included on the list with a map of Sebring.

'Back to school' clothing giveaway is Aug. 8

COLUMBIANA - The "back to school" clothing giveaway, for families in need, will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 8 at the First Christian Church, 39 Cherry St.

Hagen Strength Team will appear

EAST LIVERPOOL -The East Liverpool Area YMCA, in partnership with the Tri State Ministerial Association, will present the Mike Hagen Strength Team to the East Liverpool YMCA downtown location at 6:15 p.m. Aug. 9.

The Strength Team is comprised of professional athletes who travel all over the world performing amazing feats of strength while sharing the powerful message of Jesus to this generation. These athletes come from all different backgrounds including professional football, college football, body builders, baseball, strong man competitors, power lifters and many other athletic fields. They have been seen on CNN, ESPN, NBC and CBS as well as by students in over 1,000 school assemblies.

Food and beverages will be provided by the Tri State Ministerial Association from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., free of charge. Donations will be accepted.

Guests will have the opportunity to take their own pictures and obtain autographs after the show. There is a $2 suggested door donation and a freewill offering during the show.

Destiny House hosting Community Day

EAST LIVERPOOL - Destiny House Church will hold its fourth annual Community Day from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 11 at 49345 Calcutta-Smith Ferry Road.

Backpacks filled with school supplies will be provided to the first 500 area children, in kindergarten through fourth grade. Children must be present to receive a backpack.

Signature Styles Salon will provide back-to-school haircuts. There also will be free eye exams. scoliosis screenings, a fresh produce distribution, inflatable jumps for the children, music, hot dogs and beverages.

Bears to Bee Preschool accepting sign-ups

LEETONIA -Leetonia Bears To Bee Preschool is now accepting applications for the 2012-13 school year.

Leetonia Library hosting 'Duct Tape Craft'

LEETONIA- The Leetonia Community Public Library will host a "Duct Tape Craft" program at 6 p.m. Monday. There will be two projects available- a small purse or a wallet. Ages 12 and up are welcome.

Library will present 'Flying with Star Wars'

SALEM - The Salem Public Library will present "Flying with Star Wars" where participants build light sabers, fold paper origami-style Jedi Fighters and Millennium Falcons and use the Force to play games.

This free program, for students in first-sixth grades, begins at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Quaker Room at the Salem Public Library.

Kooltime Kruisers hosting cruise

COLUMBIANA - The Kooltime Kruisers will host a Midnight Car Cruise, from 9 p.m. to midnight Saturday, to drive out hunger at Pizza Hut in the Oakmont Plaza (rain or shine).

The entry fee for cars is $5 or five non-perishable food items to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank.

Admission to the show is free to the public, but spectators are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items. Sponsors of the Midnight Cruise are Brittain Chevrolet, Stadium GM, Columbiana Chrysler, and #1 Performance Center a division of Columbiana Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick.

Special guests this year are the Ohio State Cars-A-team van, Bumble bee Transformer, The Bandit, Knight Rider and my 2005 General Lee Drifting movie car. For every $1 given, the food bank will be able to distribute $15 worth of food in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley distributes food to 153 hunger relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

hosting Aug. 1 book signing

SALEM - The Look Nook Gift Shop at Salem Community Hospital is hosting a special book signing on Aug. 1. Local author Karen Biery will sign copies of her latest novel, "Chattels," from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

"Chattels" is set in the 1860s and tells the fascinating tale of George, a twice-captured slave from Oak Bend, Ga., who embarks on a journey to freedom with the help of abolitionists.

As George settles in the rural community of Salem, Ohio, he faces tribulations and constant pursuit. Local history buffs are sure to enjoy Biery's depiction of Salem and its role in the Underground Railroad.

Biery's other historical novels, "Believe" and "Pieces," are also available for purchase in the gift shop which is accessible by entering the hospital through the main lobby and taking the glass elevator to the second floor, or by taking the elevated walkway over State Street. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Society will meet Aug. 2

WINONA -The Winona Area Historical Society plans to meet at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 2 in the Winona Friends Meeting House. The community is invited to attend.

SALEM - Sterling House will host a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3. Proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer's Association. Table space is available for a $10 donation. For more information call 330-337-9096.

SALEM - A Getting Crafty class begins at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 13 in the Salem Public Library's Quaker Room.

LEETONIA - The Leetonia Shade Tree Commission is currently pruning trees in the curb lawn. They are removing the trimmings but not any others. There is no scheduled brush pick up by the village until later in the year.

Greenford School Alumni

Banquet will be held Aug. 18

GREENFORD - The 108th Greenford School Alumni Banquet will be held on Aug. 18 at Angels for Animals, 4750 W. South Range Road, Canfield.

The social hour begins at 5 p.m. followed by a buffet dinner at 6 p.m. Cost is $22 per person.

Members of the honored class of 1962 will receive their dinner for free. Reservations may be made by calling Stevie Kelly Coleman at 330-702-1161 before Aug. 7.

Crestview HS becomes part of

Paper Retriever Recycling

COLUMBIANA - Crestview High School is now part of the Paper Retriever Recycling program with two recycling bins located on the bus garage drive off of Crestview Road and the Rebel stadium parking lot. Paper Retriever is a community-based program that combines recycling and fund raising.

All paper products such as newspaper, magazines, catalogs, mail, folders, shredded paper, phone books, soft cover books should be placed in the yellow and green bins. No cardboard is accepted.

Community members interested in helping with this program are asked to deposit their paper, during school hours, by using the bin located on the bus garage drive. The funds generated from the paper recycling program will be used for student support.
