LEETONIA - Virginia (Aunt June) (Conkey) Warner, of Leetonia, Ohio went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 11, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
June was born in Leetonia, Ohio on Jan. 22, 1918. Her parents were John and Jessie Conkey. She was married to Leonard (Uncle Pap) Warner, who preceded her in death. Aunt June was a devoted daughter, wife, and aunt. She spent the first part of her married life in Texas helping her husband, Leonard, recover from severe injuries he had received in the WWII Battle of the Bulge.
June was active in church and for many years was responsible for the annual "lawn festival." June was an excellent cook and baker. Her food and desserts were available at church functions and fundraising events. June was the floor supervisor at the Dan Dee pretzel factory in Leetonia, eventually retiring from Bakers Union Local 19.
Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, traveling and "clowning." She belonged to a clown group who visited retirement homes and special groups, cheering up the residents. In her eighties, she traveled to rural areas of Mexico to help build an orphanage and care for the children. June was awarded the "Citizen of the Year" honors for her volunteer and civic activities. She was always fast to offer her opinion and would often say, "The whole thing in a nutshell is."
Three nephews, Donald Conkey, Jr., John Conkey, and, Charles Conkey; and one niece, Margaret Ishii, survive her. Special thanks to Pastor Kari Lankford and Pastor William Medford for their kindness and caring visits to Aunt June.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at 10 a.m. in Oakdale Cemetery, Leetonia with Pastor William Medford of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Washingtonville officiating.
Arrangements were made by the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home, Leetonia.
