SALEM - Carl R. Sheets, 83, of Salem died unexpectedly at 5:40 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2012 at the Salem Community Hospital.
Carl was born Oct. 21, 1928 in Columbiana, Ohio, the son of the late Ross and Irene (Wilhelm) Sheets.
He was a 1946 graduate of Columbiana High School where he played football and basketball for the Clippers. He continued his football career and education at The Ohio State University for two years before joining the United States Air Force.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1971 where he attained the rank of Major and was a senior navigator bombardier. He was part of the S.A.C. (Strategic Air Command). He served in the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. He was awarded the bronze star for merit and service.
Upon retirement from the U.S. Air Force, he moved to Salem and became the manager of the Quaker Cable Television Company in 1973, then retired from Landmark Cablevision in 1993.
He was a member of the Salem Hills Golf Club, the Elks, the Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis Club and the Salem Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed playing golf, playing cards, following the Salem Quakers and spending time with family and friends.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and an only brother, Bob, and sister-in-law Erma Jean of Warren.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Margaret Hollinger Sheets, and two sons, John (Carlotta) Sheets of Cortland and Jim (Lynn) Sheets of Pittsburgh, and four grandchildren, Tatum, Preston, Hayden and Reagan.
Visitation will be at Stark Memorial Funeral Home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. with the service to follow at 8 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Meta Cramer officiating.
Inurnment will be at Green Haven Memorial Gardens in Canfield.
