Damascus Ruritans, Boy Scouts retire flags

July 1, 2012
Salem News

DAMASCUS- The Damascus Ruritan Club, led by member Allan Milliken, with the help of Boy Scout Troop 55, led by Scoutmaster Paul Antram, retired 1067 flags during a flag retirement ceremony June 9 at the Damascus Community Center.

Club member Pastor John Ryser of the Damascus Friends Church opened the service with prayer. Levi Beck, a West Branch graduate, played the taps on his trumpet.

The troop color guard lowered the park flag to half mast prior to the ceremony to represent all the flags to be retired. The Boy Scouts demonstrated how to fold the flag, honor the service of each flag and cut the flag as a proper disposal. They then showed how to retire the flags, burning each white stripe, then each blue stripe separately, and then the field of stars.

Those present to observe the ceremony were each given a flag for them to place on the fire. Damascus volunteer firefighters also attended the ceremony.

The club plans to have a retirement ceremony once a year. Those with a flag to retire should contact one of the club members.
