By HEATHER YOUNG,
Salem Community Center
The Salem Community Center (SCC) is proud to offer the SilverSneakers Fitness Program to our community. We are currently in our sixth year of participating in this wonderful, free program.
SilverSneakers is the nation's leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults with over 1,400 locations participating nationwide. The program offers free physical activity, health education, and some social events for Medicare-eligible and Group Retiree members.
Eligibility is usually for age 65 and older, but, in some cases, those of any age deemed disabled and receiving Medicare qualify for this excellent program.
Some insurance carriers mail SilverSneakers cards directly to those who are eligible, while others do not. If you have received a SilverSneakers card in the mail, bring it to the Salem Community Center and we will enroll you into the program and get you started on your membership.
If you have not received SilverSneakers information in the mail, call or stop at the Salem Community Center and ask the front desk staff to check your eligibility. They only need your name and date of birth. They will be able to confirm your eligibility right away.
What do SilverSneakers members receive at the Salem Community Center? All SilverSneakers members receive a regular individual membership plus the signature SilverSneakers Fitness Program classes at no charge. Your SilverSneakers membership also gives you admittance to any participating SilverSneakers facility throughout the country.
Free is good anytime, but during these difficult financial times, free is extraordinary! The free Salem Community Center membership includes:
Indoor walking track
State-of-the-art fitness equipment
Each member is encouraged to take a free orientation of the Fitness Floor where use of the machines is demonstrated. Personal training is also available at an affordable rate.
The free SilverSneakers classes are designed specifically for older adults and are taught by certified instructors. Instructors are trained and certified by nationally accredited fitness organizations. Their goal is to consistently teach classes in the safest and most effective format possible and to see that each participant is performing to his/her own level of fitness.
Plus, the instructors strive to ensure that participants enjoy the program and "have fun." The motto of the fitness program is "Get fit, have fun and make friends." That motto is carried throughout the Salem Community Center's senior program.
The free SilverSneakers classes include Range of Motion, Cardio Circuit, YogaStretch and SilverSplash (all are 45 minutes long). Exercise classes are taught in informal groups of both men and women. Class descriptions include:
Range of Motion This class is perfect for the young at heart! Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of motion, and activities for daily living skills.
Exercises are performed in seated and/or standing positions with the use of chairs, hand-held weights, elastic tubing and mini balls. All participants perform to their own level of ability.
Cardio Circuit This class "picks up the pace" of the basic Range of Motion class. It adds some cardiovascular exercises, and the entire class is done in a standing position (if applicable). Chairs are still available for balance, steadiness, rest, or for those who cannot stand for long periods of time.
The class also includes a strengthening segment using rubber tubing, weights and balls similar to the basic Range of Motion class. All participants perform to their own level of ability.
SilverSplash The SilverSplash class offers an exercise program based in the shallow depth of the pool. This class is filled with fun while inspiring agility, flexibility, balance and cardiovascular endurance. Not a water person? Not a problem. No swimming ability is necessary to enjoy the benefits the water has to offer.
Yoga Stretch This program will allow you to safely perform a variety of yoga postures and positions while using the support of a chair. Move your body through poses that will increase your flexibility, balance and range of motion.
The SilverSneakers class schedule is:
Monday: 9 a.m. Cardio Circuit; 11 a.m. SilverSplash
Tuesday: 10 a.m. Range of Motion
Wednesday: 9 a.m. Cardio Circuit; 11 a.m. SilverSplash
Thursday: 10 a.m. Range of Motion

SilverSneakers members are not required to take the free classes, but you'll miss out on a lot of fun! For non-SilverSneakers, the above classes are also part of the Salem Community Center class program and can be purchased. Stop in or call the Front Desk for pricing.
