SALEM - Dr. James R. "J.R." Milligan, 89, of Country Club Lane, Salem, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, April 27, 2012, following a long illness.
Dr. Milligan was born on July 25, 1922 in Willard, Ohio, the son of Kenneth and Iris (Stinger) Milligan. He was a 1940 graduate of Willard High School, where he played football and participated in musical activities. After graduating early from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1943, he was enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces and was first stationed at The Greenbrier in West Virginia.
He also served at hospitals in Biloxi, Miss. and West Point, N.Y. before his honorable discharge as sergeant from Fort Dix, New Jersey in 1946.
After his military service, Dr. Milligan was accepted to Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Following his graduation in 1950, he completed his internship at St. Luke's Hospital and residency at Crile Hospital, both in Cleveland.
Dr. Milligan married Margaret (Peggy) Roose in 1951, and moved to Salem, joining the family practice of Dr. Gail A. Roose at the Salem Central Clinic in 1952. He continued with Gail A. Roose Medical Associates on Pershing Street in Salem until his retirement in 1995.
Dr. Milligan was a resident and longtime member of the Salem Country Club, where he served as a board member and president. He was an active member of the Salem Golf Club, where he pursued his love of golf and enjoyed weekly games of gin rummy with friends well into his 89th year.
He was very interested in, and enjoyed, people, and was known for his sharp wit and memory for detail. He loved cars, liked to travel and always knew the best restaurants along the way. His entire adult life, his home was never without a dog or two. He was extremely proud of his two granddaughters.
Dr. Milligan was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy and his son, Michael.
He is survived by his daughter, Mindy (Bill) Saunders of Powell, Ohio and granddaughters, Amy Saunders of Columbus, Ohio and Hannah Saunders of Chicago.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 4 at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Meta Cramer officiating.
