Water break affects Palestine customers

EAST PALESTINE - Water department workers logged six hours Wednesday fixing a broken waterline on Moore Lane that left at least 30 customers with poor water pressure.

Water operator Denny Griffith said the water main break happened around 7 p.m., damaging the blacktop road and surrounding area.

The six-inch water main is roughly more than 50 years old and is already targeted for replacement this summer.

The break occurred not far from where Moore Lane intersects with East High Street. The line supplies water to the northwest part of town.

Griffith attributed the break to the age and existing deterioration of the pipe. He said the valves "wouldn't hold still," resulting in low pressure to affected customers.

Although he wasn't certain, he said some houses may have been without water due to their elevation.

Moore Lane was closed to traffic while Griffith, supervisor John Jurjavcic and two others replaced a 5.5-foot section of the pipe.

Jurjavcic was unsure how much water was lost in the break, but estimated several thousand gallons escaped.

He said that over a 10-year period the line has broken at least 8 to 10 times, if not more.

"It's in bad shape," he said.

He also said the department had some difficulty getting its equipment to the break because Moore Lane is so narrow. Water pressure was restored and the road opened to traffic by 1 a.m.

The waterline is targeted for replacement in June. Approximately 2,000 feet of 10-inch plastic water main will replace the failing transite water main. The project was initiated in 2009 and is estimated to cost little more than $334,000.

Funding was awarded through the Environmental Protection Agency's Water Supply Revolving Loan Account in 2011, according to information previously obtained from former village Manager Gary Clark.

Griffith said once the new line is installed the entire road will be resurfaced.
