EAST PALESTINE - Robert Calvin McElroy, 87, of East Palestine, died at 2:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown, while surrounded by his sons.
He was born on April 1, 1924 in Wellsville,the son of the late Daniel G. and Edith (Maloney) McElroy.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, from October 1942 through May 1946. He was a B-17 and B-29 mechanic attaining the rank of sergeant and was stationed in Tampa, Fla., the Philippines and Kagoshima, Japan.
He married Wilma Jean Bacon on April 14, 1951 at the First Presbyterian Church in East Palestine. Soon after marriage he had been employed as a sheet metal worker, while attending college. Upon graduation he was associated American Air Filter as an Engineer and at Ohio Hoist in Lisbon.
He then owned with several partners and operated Safety Lift Company with his family for 15 years. Upon retirement he worked for East Palestine as building and zoning inspector, retiring again at the end of 2009.
Mr. McElroy was a member and elder of the New Waterford Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jean McElroy; sons, Richard (Linda), Terry and Eric (Darlene) of East Palestine, Steven of Columbiana and Douglas of Leetonia; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; well as four sisters, Arlene, Donna, Delores and Joyce.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the New Waterford Presbyterian Church with Reverends Steven and Meta Cramer officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the combined units of the American Legion Post 31 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4579.
Calling hours will be held at Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be at Glenview Cemetery. A Masonic service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
