NORTH CANTON - Malone freshman Eric Barto's debut couldn't have gone much better at the Stark County Challenge on Saturday.
Barto, a Columbiana High School graduate, won the men's 400 meters (50.57 seconds) and tied for fifth in the 200 meters (22.46).
Other area athletes who placed were Mount Union sophomore Jon Karmazin from United was third in the 5,000 meters (16:17.20) and Mount Union freshman Jake Boyer from East Liverpool was fifth (16:20.90); Mount Union sophomore Dustin Matak from Salem was third in the 100 dash (11.06); Mount Union sophomore Ryan Kohler from Minerva was third in the 400 meters (51.68); Mount Union sophomore Daniel Thornberry from East Liverpool tied for fourth in the high jump (6-2 3/4).
Walsh junior Jordan Groubert was first in the men's 5,000 meters (16:04.70) and Walsh reshman Justin Groubert was second in the 1,500 meters (4:05). They are the sons of former Crestview state champion Chris Groubert.
