Donald Ralph Schneider

NORTH GEORGETOWN - Donald Ralph Schneider, 83, of North Georgetown, Ohio, passed away at 11 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Schneider was born in Stark County, Ohio, Sept. 22, 1928, the son of the late Ralph and Beatrice (Hang) Schneider.

At age 12 he moved to North Georgetown, where he had since resided as a very active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, serving over the years as a councilman, church treasurer, Sunday school superintendent, and teacher. He also served for many years on the church property committee.

Following his 1946 graduation from the former Goshen High School, he enlisted with the U.S Army, serving three years in Alaska. He became a member of the George D. Worth American Legion Post #574. In the 1950s, Don served as Director and President of the Columbiana County Farm Bureau Federation, later hired as an employee.

During this time he was very active in the North Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department and farmed with his father. Don continued as a lifelong dedicated poultry, beef, and agricultural farmer while also working at Morgan Engineering where he continued as a consultant following his retirement.

A member of the Stark County Genealogical Society, he wrote a number of family genealogies of his ancestors as well as enjoyed traveling the world for research and recreation. He also researched the history of the North Georgetown area and the original cemetery of 1813, which he personally restored and maintained.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Verna Jean (Hawk) Schneider, whom he married July 8, 1951; three daughters, Mrs. Zane (Verna Kay) Ziegler and Mrs. Larry (Barbara) Bratton, both of Beloit, and Lori Schneider of Cleveland; one son, Fredrick (Margaret) Schneider of Piqua; four grandchildren, Melinda Bratton, Mrs. William (Bridget) Kale, Ryan (Ruth) Ziegler and Scott Ziegler; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Roger (Doris) Stitle of Florida. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Charlton, of Marysville, Ohio.

The family will receive friends at Stark Memorial Funeral Home in Salem from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7. Informal visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral services, which will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in North Georgetown with Pastor Carolyn Wagar-Hier officiating. Burial will follow in the North Georgetown Cemetery, with military honors.
