MINERAL RIDGE - The United Local girls started out slow in their tournament opener Monday against Campbell Memorial, but a strong second quarter put the Eagles in control as they cruised to a 55-33 victory at the Division III sectionals at Mineral Ridge High School.

"We were sluggish all around," United coach Sam Mathias said. "It's hard to get a team up for a game against a team that's 0-20, but a win's a win. You gotta get through on the bad nights too."

Campbell (0-21) jumped out to a 6-0 lead before United (18-3) got on the board with a three-pointer from Sam Spitler with 4:30 to go in the first. United's full-court pressure allowed the Eagles to go up 10-6 and 12-8 before Campbell's Isabel Espada hit a three to make it 12-11 at the end of the first.

After that, it was all Eagles.

United went on a 13-0 run to start the second quarter, highlighted by four points each from Mackenzie Gatchel and Cassidy Yoder. The Eagles held Campbell scoreless in the frame until the Red Devils' Brittany Williams split a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left in the half. Williams added a layup before the buzzer, closing the half with United up 25-14.

United continued to pour it on in the third quarter, outscoring Campbell 21-6. Eagle senior Taylor Smith dropped in 10 of her 12 points during the period, putting United up 46-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Red Devils came out gunning in the fourth quarter, firing up quick three-pointers to try to chip away at the gap.

They only connected on two from deep, though, outscoring United 13-9 for the period.

"We had no energy tonight, nothing really to pick us up," Mathias said. "We knew we were more athletic going in. In order for us to advance, we gotta play a lot better than we did tonight.

"There were some bright spots here and there. Our starters played well at times. I think it makes us a dangerous team in this tournament when we can go 10 deep like we did at times tonight."

Gatchel led United with 13 points and five steals, while Emily Zehentbauer added 10 points and five steals. Yoder had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

For Campbell, Espada scored 17 and Williams added 7.

In the early game, Brookfield outlasted Champion, 47-39, in overtime. The game was deadlocked at 33 at the end of regulation before Brookfield outscored Champion 14-6 in the extra period to take the win.

United is now set to take on Brookfield at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the sectional final.
