Salem High School Class of 1961 celebrates 50-year reunion

The Salem High School class of 1961 celebrated its 50-year reunion over the weekend of Aug. 26-28. Festivities began with a golf outing at Salem Hills on Friday afternoon. An open house and bonfire followed at the home of Polly Begalla Schaffer with 75 guests present. On Saturday, class members and guests attended a tour of the alumni office conducted by Jim McNeal. Saturday evening a dinner and dance was held at the Saxon Club with approximately 100 in attendance. The committee compiled a booklet of names and addresses for each attendee. A power point memorial presentation was conducted by Chuck Moffett to honor the 44 deceased members of the class. On Sunday morning, Phil and Marge Greenisen hosted a brunch at their farm with 40 in attendance. Prizes were awarded to the following: Kathy Weber Bartha, Ruthie Doyle Nennig, Helle Jensen Albrechtsen, McNeal, Neil Paxson, Gary Devan, Ned Jones, Larry Shaffer, Kathy Kleon Shaffer, Dick Lippiatt, Wayne Walton, Tony Chitea, Linda Huffman, Jake Evans, Ann Marie Lavelle Brubaker, Barb Sanders Karol, Diane Karp Knepper, Karen Wachsmith Hively and Ron Crumbaker. The special spirit award was presented to Dave Schuster. Classmates attended from Arizona, California, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, New Mexico, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Denmark. Members of the reunion committee were Walton, Hively, Dorothy Spack Hahn, Judy Menning Flading, Knepper, Ralph Knepper, Sandy Herbert Crumbaker, Carolyn Gordon Jones, Janice Frank Paumier, Crumbaker and Schaffer. The next reunion will be held in 2016.
