- Scott D. Cassinger, 30, Lakeside Drive, Beloit, was charged Friday with assault and criminal damaging after Virgil French, same address, reported Cassinger struck him with a pipe. French showed deputies a large red mark on his leg, according to reports. Cassinger told deputies French assaulted him and showed deputies a red mark and mud on his shirt from being thrown to the ground. French had recorded the altercation on his phone and played it for deputies, and while checking the area around Cassinger's vehicle, reported finding a spot on the ground where it appeared he had dropped to the ground and rubbed mud on himself. Cassinger reportedly threw and broke French's phone, resulting in the criminal damaging charge. In a separate report an hour earlier, French had advised his wife, Nancy, was trying to find someone to assault him. He reported Cassinger was overheard by another person saying Mrs. French was willing to pay someone to beat him up. French said he had had problems with Cassinger texting him but the texts contained no threats.
