Mr. and Mrs. Paul Patterson of West Grant Street, East Palestine, celebrated 50 years of marriage at an open house reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 21 in the fellowship hall of the First United Presbyterian Church. The event was hosted by their children, Robert (Luci) Patterson of East Palestine, Rebecca (Van) Zanic of Beaver Falls, Pa., and Julie (Martin) Flaherty of Beaver, Pa.
The former Shirley Montgomery, daughter of Albert and Eileen Montgomery, became the bride of Paul Patterson, son of J. Renwick and Corinne Patterson, on Aug. 19, 1960, at the former Trinity United Presbyterian Church in East Palestine. The Rev. James Renwick Patterson, the bridegroom's father, officiated.
Wanda (Heck) Book was the maid of honor, and David Patterson, the bridegroom's brother, served as best man.
Mr. Patterson retired after a combined 37 years at Newark Public Schools, East Palestine City Schools, Boardman Local Schools, and Heartland Christian School. Following his teaching career he was employed for 10 years at the Chippewa Home Depot. He has served as elder, Sunday school teacher, and choir member in the local Presbyterian church.
Mrs. Patterson retired after over 30 years of teaching in East Palestine City Schools and Real Life Christian Academy in Salem. She has served as Sunday school teacher, Christian Education committee member, and choir member in their church.
The Pattersons have eight grandchildren.
