Nancy J. Yakubek

SALEM-Nancy J. Yakubek, 83, of 523 West Sixth Street, Salem died at 8:10 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at the Essex I in Salem.

She was born July 3, 1926, the daughter of the late Charles and Grace (Wrigley) O'Connell.

After graduation from Salem High School in 1944, Nancy had worked at the Salem News as a proofreader. She was a member of the First Friends Church in Salem. She was a board member and past member of Project HELLO, a member of the Salem Elks Auxiliary, and a member of the Salem Hospital Auxiliary. She been a Girl Scout Leader and was on the Girl Scout Advisory Board. She was a volunteer worker for Meals on Wheels, a board member of Mobile Meals, a volunteer worker for Project HELLO and a long time volunteer at Salem Community Hospital. She loved cooking and baking.

Her husband, John Yakubek, whom she married June 1, 1945, preceded her in death March 2, 1998.

Survivors include a son, John Phillip Yakubek of Salem, Ohio; three daughters, Lois (David) Bricker of Salem, Patty (Dick) Bails of Salem and Susie (Steve) Miller of Irmo, South Carolina; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Kenneth and Ernest O'Connell and three sisters, Blanche Earley, Lois O'Connell and Thelma O'Connell preceded her in death.

Services will be held at 1:30 on Monday at First Friends Church with Pastor John Pierce officiating.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery.
