WESTON, Vt.-Robert Dale Barr, 85, formerly of Salem, passed away at his home in Weston, Vt., on Dec. 21, 2009.
The son of Norman and Margaret (Ellis) Barr, he was born June 29, 1924, in East Palestine, Ohio. After graduating from high school in New Waterford in 1942 he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving on a forward artillery observation team with the 2nd Battalion, 12th Marines, Third Marine Division in combat on Bouganville, Guam and Iwo Jima in the Pacific Theater during World War II. At the conclusion of the Iwo Jima campaign Robert was selected to attend U.S.M.C. Officers' Candidate School at Oberlin College. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1945.
Earning a degree in business administration from Youngstown College he joined the accounting firm of Hill & Hammond, later Hill, Barth & King. A member of the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants, Robert was active in the business community, serving as president of the Rotary chapter and on the boards of directors of several local companies including the Salem Area Industrial Development Corporation, Quaker Manufacturing, Cardinal and the former First National Bank of Salem. He retired as senior partner of Hill, Barth & King and managing partner of the firm's Salem office in 1986, retiring to Weston, Vt. In retirement he served on the audit committee of the Village of Weston and the audit committee of the Wantastiquet Trout Club.
An avid outdoorsman, he spent many seasons hunting in Wyoming, Colo., and the Canadian Arctic. Robert acted as scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts of America troop at St. Paul's parish in Salem, as well as serving on the executive committee of the Columbiana Council B.S.A. He was a member of the Salem Country Club, Salem Golf Club, Salem Rotary, Rockwell Springs Trout Club, Wantastiquet Trout Club and the Third Marine Division Association. He was a member of St. Joseph's parish in Chester, Vt.
Robert is survived by his wife, Agnes Leona (Cain) Barr of Weston, Vt.; three daughters, Susan (Tony) Isbell of Rhome, Texas, Marci (Waldo) Abbot of Greenwich, Conn., and Bobbi (Roger) Pierce of Manhattan, N.Y.; a son, Brian (Laila) Barr of Kettering, Ohio; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Burial is planned in Salem.
Arrangements were handled by Eternal Blessings Crematorium in Springfield, Vt.,
