Troll’s Jewelry marks 75th year

Jackie Troll, owner of Troll's Jewelry Store in downtown Salem, celebrated 75 years in business on Tuesday and was honored by the Salem Retail & Business Association on Tuesday at Spanky's on Penn Ave. Councilman Joe Radin is helping her cut the cake. Radin is also president of the SRBA. Troll said he father, Foster C. Troll, "couldn't get a job during the depression" and began repairing clocks and watches in Columbiana. "That's how it started," Troll Said. A 1946 Salem High School graduate, she noted his nickname was "Heck" because he was always getting into trouble. The store opened on Dec. 29, 1934 and Troll has worked there since getting out of high school and has attended the Gem Institute of America. At 81, Troll said she has no plans to retire. "They'll probably just carry me out," she joked while noting she has had "a lot of good help" like Melinda Schwingle. Troll's father opened the business "in a little tiny room" within two doors of where it's located now on East State Street, she said. (Salem News photo by Larry Shields)
