SALEM-TOPS Chapter 1598 has canceled its meeting on Thursday.
ROC opening
SALEM - The ROC of Salem, a teen youth center at 261 S. Lundy Ave., is holding its grand opening from 7 to 10:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
The center is open to Salem-area teens ages 14-20. The event features live music, billiards, foosball, air hockey, movies, a Wii, basketball and more. Area businesses have donated free food and beverages will be served, also free of charge. Parking is available in the public lot across the street from The ROC. Financial aid
HANOVERTON-United Local High School will hold a financial aid meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 6 in Room 310. A representative from the financial aid office at Youngstown State University will review sources of financial aid and give instructions on how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Parents of students who are planning to further their education are encouraged to attend.
Preservation Society
SALEM-The Salem Preservation Society plans to meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Salem Historical Society meeting room, 208 S. Broadway Ave. Enter at back of the building off East Pershing Street. New members are welcome.
Breakfast change
SALEM-Due to the holidays, the Salem Hunting Club's monthly breakfast will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. Jan. 9.

Estate planning
COLUMBIANA-An estate planning program titled "How to keep your farm in the family" will be held on Jan. 12 at Das Dutch Village Inn, 150 E. State Route 14. Two seatings are planned, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 800-307-5544. The guest speaker is Jack N. Alpern, estate planning attorney.
Reading Club
SALEM-The Children's Department at Salem Public Library is offering a Winter Reading Club for children ages 3 and up. With this year's theme, "Snow Better Time to Read!," the children's department staff hope that readers will be motivated to come to the library on cold and snowy days to further develop their reading skills. Children can begin turning in books on Jan. 2. The club ends on Jan. 30. Children who read 10 books (or 300 pages) may enter their names in a drawing for book prizes which will be awarded on Feb. 1. Damascus history
DAMASCUS - A new history of Damascus has recently been released. Available at three Damascus locations is the 266 page softcover book, "Damascus Through the Years, 1808-2008" completed through the efforts of the Bicentennial Book Committee and edited by Clarence Sekerak Besides an extensive history of the community, included are many color pictures and events of the two hundredth anniversary celebration held during the summer of 2008.
