Salem attorney to show model trains during First Night SalemDecember 29, 2009 - By KEVIN HOWELLSALEM- A local attorney is bringing the model train out from under the Christmas tree this New Year's. Salem attorney Fred Naragon's model train set will be a featured venue during First Night Salem Thursday. The trains are set up in the back of Naragon's law practice office, accessible from Sugar Tree Alley. It will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. Featuring seven trains, each pre-dating the World War II, as well as multiple buildings and trackside attractions - and even an elevated track- the miniature town is busy every Christmas, Naragon said. This is the first time, though, that he will be featured during First Night Salem. "I thought maybe it would add something different that people will like to see, particularly the kids," he said. Frequently associated with Christmas, the model train hobby is far more than just some seasonal fun, Naragon said. "I've been interested in trains since I was a kid," he said. "I remember sitting and watching the trains come into Salem when I was little." It also provides a sense of control, Naragon added. "Being the engineer, at the controls," he noted. "It's fun just to watch them run, to go around the track you built." First Night Salem is a volunteer-driven, non-profit community event that offers an alcohol-free environment to ring in the new year. Admission badges cost $10, including admission to all venues, and can be purchased at all Salem banks, Salem Giant Eagle, Salem Chamber of Commerce, Salem Historical Society, Salem Community Center and Kolby's. They will also be available at each venue during the event. Kevin Howell can be reached at khowell@salemnews.net |
