Support through quilting

By MATTHEW SCHOMER, Staff Writer
POSTED: November 30, 2009

LISBON - Four women from Roseland Apartments are taking their new hobby and turning it into a way to show support for local soldiers serving overseas.

"We just think the guys are doing a great job, so we owe them something," group member Mary Jane Wells described the men and women of the armed forces.

The women, who describe their group as the "bingo babes," became the "quilting babes" in September when they started on their first quilt.

One of the four, Vivian Rouse, said Wells presented the idea to make quilts for armed service members to her in August, and they started on their first quilt together shortly thereafter. Meeting once each week, the ladies took about six weeks to make their first quilt and were putting the finishing touches on their second after just three or four weeks.

None of the women have been quilting long. Rouse said she made her first in July for a family reunion.

"I just wanted to learn how to do it," she explained.

Working as a team, two women do the actual quilting while the other two perform specialty jobs such as threading needles.

The group is looking for local families and friends of military members who are currently overseas and may want to receive one of their quilts. Anyone who would like to request a quilt for someone serving overseas may call 330-424-9258 or 330-383-0488 or may inquire at apartment 30 or 33 in Roseland Apartments.

The group also gladly accepts and donated materials they can use in their quilts, from old clothing to flat sheets, although its members say they cannot use silk.

"It's very much appreciated," Rouse said of any donations.

Additionally, the Lisbon Community Church has agreed to send a Bible with every quilt the group sends overseas.
